Every week here at the Ohio OVI Blog we put out a check point list that we hope will encourage people to realize that the police are out looking for drunk drivers. We do this because we don’t want drunk drivers on the streets of Cleveland. We really don’t.

Often we get messages from people who heed our warnings – people who designate a driver before they down their first Christmas Ale. Still, though, our message doesn’t get out to just everybody. So today we’d like to highlight another reason you don’t want to get an OVI or DUI in Ohio: The mug shot.

Here is a story about celebrity David Cassidy. He was charged with DUI last week and hauled down to the police station where they took this beautiful glamour shot of his mug.

So what’s the moral of this story? Listen to the Ohio OVI Blog. Don’t drink and drive. If you do, you’ll get a DUI – which is expensive – and your ugly mug shot will end up in the papers. Is that what you want?

For more on some of the horrors of DUI, visit our site Cuyahoga County DUI.com which goes into some of the punishments for conviction.

Loyal Ohio OVI readers: Our list has been stolen. Or lost. Or something. Whatever happened, the city list we used to compile our weekly check point blog is gone. We need to rebuild it.

So we’re reaching out to you. Tell us what Northeast Ohio cities we should call each week and we’ll do it. Do it by commenting on our blog, shooting us a note, contacting us on Facebook or tweeting us. We look forward to hearing from you.

We have to apologize this week, as our actual job (defending our clients), is keeping us very, very busy. We will not be able to do a full check point post in Northeast Ohio this weekend. We will be back next weekend.

In previous research on check points we heard from South Euclid that they’d likely be having one on Friday night, but we did not get the details.

As always, we want you to get home safely. Be smart and designate a driver. If for some reason you ignore that advice and need an attorney, we’ll take care of you.

Happy weekend, Northeast Ohio. The Browns home opener is Sunday, if you handle watching it, which means that the police in Cleveland will be on the lookout.

Here are your trouble spots for this weekend. Remember, drive carefully and designate a driver.

Cuyahoga County Sheriffs Department – They will be out around the Browns Stadium this Sunday for the home opener.

Warren – We were unable to get an answer this week, so keep an eye out and be safe.

These areas either are not having a check point or have not confirmed one way or another. If we left a message and haven’t heard back it’s noted in the text.

Akron/Summit County – Couldn’t get official word. We will call back again on Friday.

Apparently the end of summer arrived the day after Labor Day this year, as the chill has arrived in Northeast Ohio. But if you’re planning to use your weekend to warm up your belly with libations, be on the lookout.

As of now we already know that Akron/Summit County police will have a check point Saturday night in Twinsburg Township at 10 p.m.

From what we understand, the following areas either will not be having a check point this weekend or haven’t publicly shared a decision yet. As always, drive safe and sober. The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s summer crack down on DUI and OVI may have ended, but local police are still looking for people driving under the influence. You don’t want to have to call us on Monday to take your case.

Hooray for long weekends! Labor Day is upon us and an extra day of weekend will be greatly appreciated at the Taubman Law office. We hope you’ll be able to enjoy friends, family and relaxation this weekend.

But we don’t run this blog to discuss weekend plans. We know you’re here to see the check points in Northeast Ohio this weekend – and there are a lot of them. With everything going on in Cleveland – the Taste of Cleveland, the Air Show, Oktoberfest, etc. – the cops will be out in full force to make sure people are driving safe. Here’s some great advice from us: Designate a driver. That advice was free, so take it. Free advice from an attorney is a rare thing.

As always, if you need actual legal help, give us a call or email.

Anyway, here are the areas with check points that we know about as of today. As always, we’ll be updating this whenever we get more information. UPDATE: See Friday’s post with more details on four of these check points.

Berea – They did not have a check point planned, but they will be doing saturation patrols to keep an eye on Oktoberfest.

Bratenhal – They will be having one Saturday between Lakeshore Drive and East 140th. It will start at 9 p.m.

Cleveland – Will have a check point on the West side on Friday. Still waiting on details.

North Royalton – Will have a check point Friday night. Looking to confirm the details with them.

Parma and Parma Heights – They might be doing one Saturday. We were told to call back on Saturday for an answer.

Seven Hills – They will have one Friday night on Rockside Road starting at 8 p.m.

A few other areas of note:

The Cuyahoga County Sheriff didn’t have one planned, but will certainly have heavy forces out on West 6th for the holiday weekend. We left a message with the Akron/Summit County department but have zero information one way or the other.

The following areas will not be having a check point this weekend, to the best of our knowledge, or have not reported one to us as of this post.

This question comes up a lot. Everybody has heard the story about the guy who gets a DUI in a bar parking lot.

Whenever people talk about this situation I always ask them about the key factor. The thing is, if you’re drunk and you’re operating a vehicle – the first step of which is putting the key in the ignition – then you can get yourself in trouble. It’s not illegal to be drunk in a car, but if the key is even in your pocket, the law gets gray very quickly.

The other question I get asked is about sleeping it off – I.E. someone who has the car running while they rest and sober up. If a police officer wishes, this is a situation where someone can get an OVI. Again, with the key in the ignition, trouble is brewing.

One other note on this topic: You can also get yourself in trouble after you’re done driving intoxicated. I know of cases where someone has walked into a police station intoxicated and told police they drove there. Plain and simple, this is a confession.

My solution: Be careful and ponder your state before you get into the car. Don’t put yourself in the position where something can be used against you in court. If you feel like you need to sleep it off, get a taxi and a motel room. If you’re reading this because you’re already dealing with a legal problem, contact me (briantaubman[at]Taubmanlaw.net) and we can discuss your options.

The weather has cooled a little bit heading into this weekend in Northeastern Ohio, meaning we can all go outside without fear of melting.

But a nicer weekend won’t change the emphasis local police have put on stopping drinking and driving.

Here’s our weekly list of check points broken down by areas we know about for this weekend and areas that we know about for future weekends. We’re still waiting on confirmation on a few spots, so this will be updated as soon as the information is available. The weekend is upon us at last, and I know the foodies in Cleveland will be out at the Feast of the assumption in Little Italy.

But before you go out and paint the town whatever color it is you like, make sure you’re driving safe. First, remember that parties attract cops; it’s just the way things are. So know that the police will be keeping an eye on the feast. Beyond that, here’s our weekly list of check points in the Northeast Ohio area. As always, drop me an e-mail or comment below if your area isn’t on here.

Be safe.

Northeast Ohio check points for August 13-15:

Cleveland: The city of Cleveland has a checkpoint scheduled for the 28th of August at 54th and Dennison.
